Insurance Plans Accepted on Headway (2026 Guide)

Last reviewed: October 30, 2026
“Does Headway take my insurance?” is the question clients ask most, and “Which carriers will I be in-network with?” is the question providers ask most. Here is what Headway’s Help Center currently says.
Commercial insurance accepted on Headway
Headway providers accept:
- Aetna
- Blue Cross and Blue Shield (in select states)
- Cigna
- Oscar
- Oxford
- UnitedHealthcare
- All Optum affiliates
Some other carriers whose mental health benefits are managed through these networks are also accepted. Availability depends on the state, and not every provider accepts every plan, so always check the individual provider’s profile.

Medicare and Medicaid
- Select Medicare Advantage plans are accepted.
- Select Medicaid managed care plans are accepted in some states.
- Original Medicare (Part B) is not accepted.
To see which government plans are supported, search “Medicare” or “Medicaid” in the insurance carrier dropdown on Headway. Providers can read our dedicated guide to Headway, Medicare Advantage and Medicaid.
What Headway does not accept
- Out-of-network benefits. Headway’s Help Center states that Headway does not work with out-of-network benefits.
- Original Medicare (Part B).
- Plans that do not cover mental health or telehealth services.
Clients without an accepted plan can still arrange private pay with a provider.
How clients check their coverage
- Create a Headway account and add your insurance details.
- Headway’s benefit verification tool looks up your mental health benefits and shows an estimated cost per session.
- If your plan shows as unverified, request a manual verification, call your insurer, or check the plans listed on a provider’s profile.
The estimate depends on your plan, the provider’s training and location, and session length. You are billed after the session, not before. For a full explanation of copays, deductibles and coinsurance, see Headway costs for clients.
What about EAP benefits?
Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) work differently from regular insurance. Headway’s main insurance help article does not list EAP as a supported benefit, so contact your EAP provider and Headway support directly before booking if you hope to use one.
Prior authorization
Some plans require approval before certain services. The provider submits the request to the insurer, and Headway support can explain the process and add the authorization to the client’s account. To check on one, contact support with the expected service date, CPT codes and units, and ICD-10 codes.
For providers: which carriers will I join?
Headway credentials you with the carriers it works with in your licensed state. Each carrier approves you separately, and you can watch progress on the Insurance Status page in Sigmund. Read the full credentialing guide.
